Battlefield Missiles

MLRS (Multiple-launch rocket system) ( USA)

Rocket calibre: 227mm
Range: 30-40km (18-25 miles) depending on rocket type.

The MLRS (Multiple-launch rocket system) entered service with the US army in the 1980's. The MLRS fires rockets containing hundreds of anti-personnel and anti-armour sub-munitions with deadly accuracy over ranges of 30 kilometres or more.

SS-1 'Scud' ( Russia)

Warhead: 1000kg (2205 Lb)
Range: 280km (174 miles) HE or 180km (112 miles) nuclear

The 'Scud' series of battlefield missiles was introduced by the Russians in 1957 as a medium range tactical weapon. This missile was used by the Russian army against rebel Afghanistan positions in the 1980's to deadly effect.

AGM-86 ALCM (Air launched Cruise Missile) ( USA)

Warhead: Conventional HE warhead
Range: 2500km (1600 miles)

The ACLM (Air-launched cruise missile) was developed as a cold-war strategic weapon system. USAF bombers equipped with the missile would be able to attack targets deep within the USSR without needing to penetrate Soviet airspace and suffer inevitable losses from SAM missiles and MiG Interceptors. Originally designed as a long-range nuclear weapon, newer variants have conventional high explosive (HE) warheads.
