PLAY (Issue 90) - 2nd Quarter 2002

CONFLICT: DESERT STORM "DON'T PUSH IT!" AND OTHER SUCH MACHISMO NONSENSE IS ALIVE AND WELL AND ARE FEATURING IN THE LATEST ADVENTURE FROM SCI.

Just over ten years ago a country in the Middle East was invaded by what many regard as the biggest threat to civilisation currently on the world stage. America eventually left Iraq leaving a previously unheard of trail of destruction behind them. Conflict: Desert Storm is a game based on the major events and missions undertaken in the Gulf War by the US and UK Special Forces - small units from the SAS and Delta Force. At least 40% of the missions in Sci's new game are real and actually did happen.

'ACHIEVES A FINE BALANCE OF REALISM AND ARCADE SKILLS'

Playing Conflict: Desert Storm is a unique experience and one that manages to achieve a fine balance between realism and arcade thrills. The missions involve everything from locating SCUD sites to rescuing the Emir of Kuwait. Battling through the narrow, sun-bleached streets of Kuwait is a thrilling exercise that impresses at every turn, even at this early stage of the game's development. To make progress you will need to establish tactics, use the squad of four specialist troops to their strengths and at all times cover each others back's. The main game is also flanked by an interesting multiplayer feature. Here the squad is split between two players who must co-operate to achieve the mission objectives. Moving down a street searching for snipers whist covering an under-fire friend as they struggle to set explosive charges is quite stunning.

Further long-term subtleties are being added to Conflict: Desert Storm, such as upgrading a soldier's skill levels and rewarding brave play with medals. There is a feeling that Conflict: Desert Storm's release is a little poorly timed considering the current world climate, but PLAY will leave such sanctimonious ramblings for 'the other mag'. As the song goes: "That's life"
