Although its design was first conceived 50 years ago, PKM machine guns continue to be manufactured in Russia and are used by the Russian army and armies of several other ex-USSR republics. Although its reliable, the PKM displays a heavy recoil and relatively poor accuracy over range.
This medium (universal) US machine gun was first designed nearly 60 years ago. A great weapon, it served until it was replaced recently by the FN MAG and M249. Most of the US army prefer the newer alternatives.
The FN M249 SAW is an air cooled, gas operated, belt-fed and automatic weapon. The SAW is operated using conventional gas action with the gas piston located below the barrel, and the barrel is locked using the traditional rotary bolt. The SAW has an excellent reputation concerning reliability and firepower.
According to many aficionados, the SS-77 is one of the words best universal machine guns. Supporting an awesome rate of fire and packing an incredibly penetrative punch, this South African weapon is only betrayed by its heavy recoil.
The basic design for the MAG was inspired by the M1918 BAR Browning Automatic Rifle, although the core action has been inverted upside down and adopted for belt feed. It may look ugly, but its extremely reliable and has been adopted by many forces including the Belgian, British, Australian, Canadian and US armies. Universal, it can be hand carried or fitted to tanks, helicopters and other vehicles.
Part of the modular XM8 weapons family, the Auto version of the XM8 is a lightweight and controllable alternative to many of its competitors. Modified ammo and intelligent design make this an excellent option. The XM8 Auto configuration features a longer barrel and a folded bipod sitting under the forearm. Recoil and accuracy are both relative class leaders although it lacks the power of some of its alternatives.
